Monarch Butterflies Takeover #MOCA

Just like a butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely migrate through America, each of these artists use their inherited, cultural memory to explore the history of their ancestors through abstract techniques.

One of my favorite works is by Miami based artist, Franky Cruz, who will install a greenhouse inside of MOCA. This greenhouse will house live caterpillars who will transform into butterflies throughout the course of the exhibition. During this metamorphosis, Cruz will take the emergence from the butterflies and microscopically photograph it as inspiration for his paintings.

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is presenting “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly,” a group exhibition featuring the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas. The exhibition will be on display through Aug. 5 with a special artist reception on Thursday, June 14 from 7-9 p.m.
