Spinello Projects “Cathedrals of Consumption” and Two Project Galleries are a Must See!

Cathedrals of Consumption

Opened at Spinello Projects in Little Haiti on Friday, May 13, 2016. The exhibition, curated by Guillermo Leon Gomez features works by Gabriele Beveridge, Andy Coolquitt, Kalup Linzy, Ad Minoliti, Bert Rodriguez, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Mika Rottenberg. Within the space transformed into a quasi-home design showroom, coinciding with Maison&Objet Americas international design fair. Gomez aims to address commoditization and branding of the artist, alongside prescribed aesthetics of exhibition design funneled into mainstream methods of visual merchandising.

Project Room 1 & 2

In two project rooms, the gallery presents Clara Varas New Works and Nicole Doran Prick. Varas’ solo project merges painting and sculpture into a humorous play with common household items and examines space and the art’s interaction with the viewer. Doran’s Prick celebrates springtime and explores art as a commodity and commerciality with her Bathroom Paintings hanging in visual contrast to a colorful array of phallus planters lined up on shelves in Project Room 2. Bulbous cacti, succulents, and air plants find homes in ceramic, biomorphic designs. Burrito Dick, Rocketship Dick, Cheese Dick, Snake Dick are Doran’s caricatures of the phallus.
